Conquering Discouragement

(C) 2001 by Charlie Read

If you’re going through a rough time and can’t seem to “see the light at the end of the tunnel,” I want to share something with you. It’s a fact that life throws us all some unexpected curves. It is even promised in the Bible that we will face trials and afflictions along life’s journey. But still, the normal Christian life should be one of joy and confidence.
Let’s address the issue of discouragement. It would be a rare person indeed who has never faced it, but the question is what we choose to do about it. The most successful people in things both natural and spiritual are the ones who use adverse circumstances as a stepping-stone rather than a stumbling block, or those whose hardships are a motivation to seek a better life.
The overcoming Christian does not ignore the reality of trials; rather he keeps his eyes on the Lord Jesus Christ and the promises of God’s Word. Jesus told us, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). It isn't that we overcome by our own talents, strength, ingenuity or resources. We overcome because Jesus overcame, and we are in Him.
The first step to conquering discouragement is to face your problem squarely in the face, yet proclaim, “I am well able to overcome it.” What if it takes you 10 months or 10 years to climb your way out of that pit of financial problems, broken relationships or sinful habits? Remember that the longest journey begins with a single step, and the Lord has promised you success. “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8).
